The small fishing town of Nazaré, located on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, has become one of the most iconic big wave surfing destinations in the world.
Each winter, monstrous waves as high as 25 meters (82 feet) rise at Praia do Norte, powered by the unique Nazaré Canyon, an underwater geological formation that channels the raw energy of the Atlantic straight toward the shoreline.

The world record for the highest wave ever surfed was set right here: Sebastian Steudtner from Germany rode a mind-blowing 26.21-meter (86-foot) wave in 2020 — a historic moment in surfing history.
